Recent success on the golf course has given me a free round of golf for 4 at Chester le Street. We have to give a few days notice, and it needs to be on a weekday to avoid competitions, but if anyone is interested please give me a shout. The voucher is valid until this time next year, so plenty of time!
Names in a hat please…

The BBC recently had a days filming at the new ‘Fodder’ farm shop and cafe building we designed for the Yorkshire Agricultural Society on The Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate.
Apparently, they filmed for 12 hours and somehow this has been condensed into 3 full minutes! and this will be aired this Friday 21st August on the BBC1 One Show (7pm start).
For those of you who have not been, here’s a chance to see it.

I came across this article by Hugh Pearman in The Sunday Times.
It has some information on the exhibitions and reveals that both architects had more in common than you might think at first glance.

Le Corbusier's La Tourette
Hugh Pearman’s website has a collection of writing on architecture.

For an inspiring day out I would recommend a visit to Liverpool before the end of the month for two good reasons.
The Le Corbusier, the Art of Architecture exhibition and the Biennale-Made Up http://www.artinliverpool.com/biennial
The Le Corbusier exhibition is a comprehensive study of his work and it is packed with models, drawings, sketches and artwork. All very inspiring and a good insight into his creative process.
The Biennale is playful and ingenious and spread over various locations in the city centre. Do not miss the giant spider by the artist Ai Weiwei which sits in its web spun between building facades….there are also revolving trees.

Whilst we’re on the subject of student work…
The Leeds School of Architecture, Landscape and Design has invited P+HS to the guest preview the end of year exhibition, on Thurs 5th June 6pm-9pm.
The exhibition is open to the public from Fri 6th to Fri 13th between 10am-4pm (Saturday 7th June 10am-2pm).
The exhibition will be held in Hepworth Point, Leeds Metropolitan University, Claypit Lane, Leeds, LS2 8BQ.
Displays will include work from:
Architecture
Landscape Architecture
Garden Art and Design
Interior Architecture and Design
Design
Graduate Certificate Landscape Architecture
PG Dip Architecture
PG Dip/MA Landscape Architecture
It seems that garden design is actually a separate course to landscape architecture, who knew? By this point, the exhibition consists of refined selection, hand-picked by the tutors, and so should only contain the good stuff (i.e. can’t guarantee us P+HSers will have any work on display, but some or all of us might do).

The P+HS fun day out in Manchester should have inspired us all. Thanks to the Social Committee (+ Eamon, + Phil the tourguide) for organising another successful event. I’m sure everyone will agree it was worth the early morning train journey…even Patrick, who failed to surface until lunchtime!

mima presents the most significant Bauhaus exhibition in the UK for 30 years, focusing on the ethos of the Bauhaus School between 1919 and 1933. The show includes works by Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Josef Albers, film works by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, architectural models, design, applied art, furniture and a specially commissioned wall drawing.
Language of Visionshowcases works by contemporary artists whose practice has a relationship to the legacy of the Bauhaus. Artists include Markus Amm, Camilla Low, Toby Paterson, Ryan Gander, Lothar Gotz and Andrew Miller.
A series of photographs by Hans Engels, presents the original Bauhaus architecture, constructed by the masters and students of the Bauhaus between 1919 and 1933, in its present condition.
Bauhaus Reviewed 1919-1933, is presented in mima’s Sound Space on the Third Floor Roof Terrace. The selection of recordings from the early 20th century goes deep into the myths surrounding the Bauhaus school and the artists it gave birth to.
The exhibition is part of NorthEast England’s programme of world-class festival and events for 2007, managed by culture10 based at NewcastleGateshead Initiative.
For dates, check MIMA
Sponsored by Barker & Stonehouse.

The School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at Newcastle University would like to invite you to an afternoon of two talks by distinguished Australian architect Paul Pholeros.
Paul is Adjunct Professor at the University of Sydney. He directs his own architectural firm with projects across Australia and recently China. Paul’s work is essentially concerned with creating places for people which engage profoundly with their environment and landscape.
Projects range from residential to community and ecotourism developments, foregrounding sociocultural, environmental and technological sustainability.
In the first of his two talks, Paul will show a recently completed tourism project in South East China.
Together with doctor Paul Torzillo and anthropologist Stephen Rainow, Paul established HealtHabitat in the mid 80s. HealtHabitat aims to improve the health of Indigenous Australians. Over the years, it has made substantial achievements in this area by working with remote Indigenous communities, housing associations, state and federal government agencies. It has been instrumental in influencing national government policy on Indigenous housing, culminating in the National Framework for the Design Construction and Maintenance of Indigenous Housing and the National Indigenous Housing Guide here. Among many others, HealtHabitat is currently managing a significant national project - Fixing Houses for Better Health - see here. In the second of his talks, Paul will discuss the history and the work of HealhHabitat.
There are likely to be many parallels and shared experiences between Paul and pracitioners working across diverse sectors in the UK - from landscape, planning and architecture to local and national government sectors concerned with health and housing policy. We hope that Paul’s talks will prompt broader discussions about such issues for mutual benefit.
Paul will speak between 3 and 6pm on Tuesday 3 July in Room 220, Level 1, Research Beehive, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne [location]. Chris P has a flyer for the talks and a summary of the work of HealtHabitat.
I do hope you can make time to join us. The event is open to all but you must RSVP to Anne.Fry@ncl.ac.uk by June 22 to reserve a place.

After a few months of delay Middlesbrough’s new institute of modern art is due to open on Saturday 27 January 2007.
MIMA’s inaugural exhibition, Draw: Conversations Around the Legacy of Drawing, features a selection of sketches and drawings from some of the most influential and revolutionary artists of the 20th Century.
With pieces from Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Henri Matisse, Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst, there is something to grab both seasoned art connoisseurs and those that don’t know their Monet from their Manet.
A spectacular opening piece from abstract artist DJ Simpson and rare sketches from Damien Hirst and Pablo Picasso are without doubt the highlights of the MIMA experience, but it wouldn’t be right to reveal anymore and ruin the surprise – you’ll just have to go along to the sneak preview exhibition on Saturday 27th January between 5.30pm and 9pm to find out for yourself.
